Safeline Brake Pads offer a check system for their 50 0000 km conditional guarantee programme

50,000 km guarantee

Safeline Brake Pads has taken a lead in the brake pad industry by offering a 50 000 km conditional guarantee that is easily monitored by the installer by using Safeline's Brake Abuse Indicating System (BAIS). Safeline's unique temperature monitoring programme assists the installer to determine if the brake pads have been abused by the driver.

Chris Brand, Marketing and Sales Director for Safeline, says: "We realised that it is virtually impossible for the installer to ascertain if a brake pad's wear was due to normal driving or if the driver abused his brake pads through bad driving habits, like braking too late and too hard. With the new BAIS indicators, the installer can immediately check and verify if the brake pads were abused."

The BAIS system consists of four coloured heat sensitive paint dots on the backing plate of the brake pad. Once the brake pads reach a certain temperature, the colour of the dots change and, by using a BAIS check card, the installer can accurately check if the brake pads were exposed to very high temperatures caused by ongoing abusive braking by the driver.

Brand explained: "We have taken into consideration that we all need to do an emergency stop from time to time. Based on our research we have noted that this would not affect the guarantee as the heat generated between the brake pad and brake disc needs to be maintained for a certain time to soak through to the backing plate where the heat sensitive dots are located. The heat would only soak through if the brake system is exposed to high temperatures for an extended time. Therefore, the brake system on a vehicle travelling on the highway would operate at a lower temperature than a vehicle being used in town."

The key to effectively using the BAIS indicators is the BAIS check card that is being supplied to all garages, workshops and fitment centres that fit Safeline brake pads. The check card matches the colours of the heat sensitive paint dots with colour combinations which indicate if the brake pad was subjected to extreme heat situations. This can be done in the presence of the customer and shows the validity of the guarantee - indicated as 50 000 km, 40 000 km, 30 000 km, 20 000km or no guarantee due to heavy abusive braking.

"At Safeline we put safety and value-for-money first. All our products boast ISO/TS 16949 accreditation, which is an automotive-related quality management system, covering all the elements of ISO 9001 but with additional requirements included that are specific to the motor industry. Our brake pads also conform to the minimum requirements as laid down in the most recent applicable Government Gazette," Brand added.
